Magnetic Magic

Magnets and other object exert force. The fields over which objects exert their force are called "force fields". All force fields extend, theorhetically, infinitely, in all directions, becoming weaker with distance. Using magnets we can explore these force fields and actually map out some of them.

Materials

  • Bar Magnet
  • Plastic Covering
  • Paper
  • Iron Filings

Procedure

  1. Wrap the Magnet with the plastic covering to keep the iron filings from sticking to it.
  2. Place the paper over the magnet.
  3. Pour the iron filings over the paper evently and observe.
  4. If done right, the paper should look something like this:

    This magnetic map shows us how similar the force lines of magnets are to those of the sun or the earth. Look at the picture below and see how similar these force lines are.
