Consequences of Earth's Magnetosphere
Space Plasma Storms
  • Cause communication and science satellites to fail
  • Causes damage to electric power systems on surface of the Earth
    • 1989 Space Storm
      • Currents on ground caused failure in Hydro-Quebec Electric Power system
      • Knocked out power in United States and Canada in over 6 million homes for 9 hours.
Other Effects

  • Pipeline Operations
  • HF Radio communication
  • Space Shuttle and Space Station activities
  • Geophysical Exploration
  • Electric power distribution
  • High-Altitude polar flights
  • Long-Line telephone communication
  • Navigation and GPS
  • Communication such as telephones, radios, and televisions

The sun dictates how we, on earth, live our daily lives. If the light shines, mankind can run outside and play without worry of running into a tree or a building in the way.At night, little light shines and one can possibly get hurt by falling or running into something. This is why understanding the sun and its weather becomes so important to our human minds. The sun goes through solar cycles every eleven years, and at the eleventh year, it could possibly result in a massive solar max.The above effects to the Earth’s magnetosphere are caused by solar max emitting solar wind, particles released from the sun.Part of the solarwind penetrates through the magnetosphere and disrupts various objects and communication listed above or disrupts satellites and communication in space such as GPS.As one can see, the sun and its weather must be understood by learned individuals to safely and wisely live our lives.

Above is a picture depicting the damage a space storm caused when it hit Earth on March 13, 1989.
